Date: 04/01/1996 Euro MPs who ended years of human rights angst by voting last month in favour of a customs union with Turkey, have received their reward - ten musical CDs from the Turkish embassy. Ten each that is, a panoply of aural entertainment to delight the hearts of, well, lovers of Turkish music. Unfortunately, not all Euro MPs fall into that bracket: many who were prepared to give Turkey's human rights record the benefit of the doubt are not willing to gloss over some of the nation's other records quite so readily. MEPs who opposed the deal didn't get any CDs, not surprisingly, and those who abstained are counting their blessings, too. “We might have qualified for five,” muttered one. “It was a close run thing.” |
