Date: 23/07/1998 Fears are rising in the Commission's anti-fraud unit that last week's media revelations of mismanagement of EU Humanitarian funds to the former Yugoslavia and the Great Lakes will sink any legal efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice. “A clever lawyer can use this kind of publicity to throw the case out of court,” said one UCLAF official. Nevertheless, Commission insiders are resigned to more bad press over the next few months, given the imminent European Parliament elections. “Bashing the EU's aid programmes is easy publicity for MEPs,” said one insider. |
