Greenland, a self‐governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark and one of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCTs) associated with the EU, is seeking new sources of revenue to develop a more self‐sustaining economy. It faces major challenges given its remote location, heavy economic dependence on the fishing industry, weak infrastructure, high unemployment, alarming drop‐out rates in education, and a long‐standing reliance on Denmark for roughly two‐thirds of its budget revenue. New opportunities have arisen thanks to Greenland's rich resources of critical raw materials which are becoming increasingly more accessible due to climate change. Various sources suggested in April 2015 that evironmental protection organisations WWF and Greenpeace were saying that the people of Greenland should be allowed to continue hunting seals, as they hunted sustainably and that the activity was necessary for many Greenland people. |
