The anniversary was particularly remarkable as it took place on the same day as a presidential election in Russia, which resulted in the reelection of Vladimir Putin for a further mandate.

In a statement, the European Union reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. It also pointed to the deterioration of the human rights situation in Crimea, in particular when it comes to the rights of Crimean Tatars. It vowed to stick to its non-recognition policy.
