Background: This was the first bilateral summit between the two sides since May 2015, when the 23rd meeting was held in Tokyo. The political agreements on free trade and strategic partnership were highly anticipated, with Commissioners meeting on the eve of this summit to make sure an agreement was within reach. The 24th bilateral summit between Japan and the European Union was held on 6 July 2017. The agenda includes the following topics: + Political agreement on EU-Japan free trade agreement and the EU-Japan strategic partnership agreement; + Discussion on measures to strengthen the EU-Japan partnership on security, energy, science and technology, development, import restrictions and data protection; + Discussion on regional matters concerning both sides. Leaders also stressed their commitment to promote an open and fair global economy and refrain from all forms of protectionism. They also supported the full implementation of the Paris Agreement. They reaffirmed their commitment to strengthen their cooperation on migration. |
