Summary: Reports, analyses and information on the electoral campaign and the aftermath of the European Parliament election held in Italy on 26 May 2019. Further information: Italy's deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini - leader of the far-right Lega - quickly became one of the leading voices in the overall debate across the European Union ahead of the European elections. His attempt to unite different likeminded nationalist parties - favourable to a 'close doors' policy for the European Union (EU) when it comes to immigration - gathered momentum and attention from media sources. In Italy, immigration and unemployment were identified as the main issues at stake ahead of the election. Pre-electoral polls suggested governing Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) was on route to be punished by the electorate, while La Lega - also part of the cabinet coalition - appeared to be retaining the credit. Centre-left Partido Democratico - the winner of the previous European election in Italy - appeared to slowly recover in the polls, though far from the leading far-right. According to preliminary results, La Lega won 34.3% of the votes, putting it comfortably in front of the center-left Democratic Party which gained 22,7% of the votes. M5S only managed to get 17,1% of the votes. Only three days after the European election defeat, Luigi DiMaio, the leader of M5S, called a confidence vote which was held on 29 May. He got the backing of 80% of the members of the M5S. |
