Further information:

Polling indicated that Viktor Orbán's Fidesz party would be highly likely to win the election with ultra-nationalist Jobbik and the fragmented centre and left parties far behind.

In March, Fidesz party was suspended by the European Peoples Party (EPP), the parliament's main centre-right grouping, amid concerns that it has violated EU principals on the rule of law. Hungary's foreign minister Peter Szijjarto said Fidesz would rethink its membership to the EPP due to the influence of pro-migration Socialists, liberals and greens, and the EPP striking an alliance with them to reach a majority in the EU parliament.

The ruling Fidesz party won the election as predicted with 52,33% of the vote. The Democratic Coalition came second with 16.26%. The Momentum party was third with 9.92%. The Socialists won 6.68%, while the nationalist Jobbik got 6.44% of votes, both weakening significantly.

Fidesz's future in Brussels remained unclear after the election as it was still suspended from the EPP. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán told supporters of his party that he would cooperate with everyone in Europe who wanted to halt immigration.
