Background: Ukraine remained high on the EU agenda since the previous summit, held in November 2016. The visa free regime for Ukrainian citizens entered into force in June 2017. Additionally, the process necessary to allow the full application of the Association Agreement with its Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area (DCFTA) was expected to be completed before the summit. After more than one year of provisional application, trade between the EU and Ukraine continued to grow and the EU has reinforced its position as the first trading partner of Ukraine. The 19th Summit between Ukraine and the European Union (EU) was held in Kyiv on 12-13 July 2017. The agenda included the following items: + Conflict in Eastern Ukraine and Russia's annexation of Crimea and Sevastopol, including the implementation of the Minsk agreements; + Reforms undertaken by the Ukrainian government in the country; + Discussion on regional and international situation. The summit welcomed the completion of the ratification of the EU-Ukraine Association Agreement on the 11 July 2017 and June 2017 entry into force of visa liberalisation for Ukrainian citizens, both of which were fundamental steps towards reinforcing the EU-Ukraine partnership. |
