7 February 2007 was the 15th anniversary since the signing, on 7 February 1992, of the Treaty on the European Union, which launched Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). The Treaty, best known as the Maastricht Treaty after the town in southern Netherlands where it was signed, set in motion a process which ultimately gave the EU a single currency, the euro, as a natural complement to the European Union's single market.
