Further information: The meeting was held in the context of the debate on the future of Europe, launched by the Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker in March 2017 with the adoption of the related White Paper. Discussions focused on the future of Europe and mainly at how to make Europe more united, stronger and more democratic. The participants also looked at the human dimension of Europe, in particular its social and environmental dimensions and how Europe can be built on principles of solidarity, social justice and sustainability. Background information: The high-level meeting is part of the regular dialogue with churches, religious communities, philosophical and non-confessional organisations foreseen by Article 17 of the Lisbon Treaty since 2009. The thirteenth annual high-level meeting with religious leaders from across Europe was held on 7 November 2017. It was hosted by the European Commission First Vice-President in the presence of the European Parliament First Vice-President and it provided an occasionto hold in-depth discussions on questions addressing issues of values and governance. |
