The European Union marked on 18 October 2016 its Anti-Trafficking Day, urging a reinvigoration of joints efforts across the Union to eradicate trafficking in human beings.

The European Commission presented a comprehensive policy review of anti-trafficking projects funded between 2004-2015, while public authorities, civil society and citizens organised and participated in events across the EU to mobilise social awareness. The review announced by the EC is one of the last remaining priority actions enlisted in the EU Anti-Trafficking Strategy for the period 2012-2016.

In 2011, the EU Anti-Trafficking Directive was adopted, putting forward a victim centred approach. The EU Anti-Trafficking Day was established in 2007 following a recommendation of the European Parliament, and a proposal of the Commission.
