How should Europe handle China? Annual report 2023

Summary:

The Centre for European Reform (CER) published its annual report for 2023 on 9 February 2024. The report includes an introduction reflecting on the European Union's (EU) approach to China.

The CER Director argues that how the EU deals with China will have a profound effect on the sort of economic and geopolitical entity that the EU becomes in the mid-21st century. China is the world’s largest economy, measured at purchasing power parity, and the EU’s number one trading partner. It accounts for about 30 per cent of global carbon emissions. And it is a weighty military and diplomatic power, building a conventional and nuclear arsenal that will challenge the United States of America's (USA) position as the pre-eminent security actor in the Indo-Pacific region.
