Summary:

Regulation (EU) 2024/257 - adopted by the Council of the European Union on 10 January 2024 - concerning the fishing opportunities for certain fish stocks in waters of the European Union (EU) in the Atlantic Ocean, Kattegat and Skagerrak for 2024, 2025 and 2026. It also introduces amendments to Regulation (EU) 2023/194 as regards deep-sea stocks.

All fishing opportunities regulations must limit the harvesting of fish stocks to levels that are consistent with the overall objectives of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP). Regulation (EU) No 1380/2013 sets out objectives for catch and fishing effort limits to ensure that EU fisheries are ecologically, economically and socially sustainable. The co-legislators adopted Regulation (EU) 2018/973 and Regulation (EU) 2019/472 establishing multiannual plans for the North Sea and for the Western waters specifying for certain stocks how to to reach those objectives when fixing catch limits.

This Act fixes fishing opportunities for certain stocks for which the fishing opportunities are established by the EU, stocks that are jointly managed with the United Kingdom (UK), Norway or subject to North-East Atlantic Fisheries Commission (NEAFC) coastal States consultations, stocks managed by regional fisheries management organisations (RFMOs), and stocks in waters of non-EU countries.

The draft law was adopted by the European Commission on 25 October 2023. A political agreement between the Member States was reached on 12 December. The Act was formally adopted by the Council of the European Union on 10 January 2024 and published in the Official Journal on 11 January 2024.
