Summary:Report published by the European Union's External Action Service (EEAS) concerning the latest political and economic developments in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR). This is the 25th annual report, covering 2022. Further information:Since the handover of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China in 1997, the European Union (EU) and its Member States have followed political and economic developments in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) under the one country, two systems principle. The year 2022 marked the 25th anniversary of the handover of Hong Kong to China and the second anniversary of the imposition of the National Security Law (NSL) on Hong Kong. The annual report illustrates the continued erosion of Hong Kong's high degree of autonomy, democratic principles, and fundamental freedoms that were supposed to be protected until at least 2047. These developments cast further doubt on China's commitment to the one country, two systems principle. This report also highlights the commercial links between the EU and Hong Kong. With 1,600 companies, the EU remained the largest foreign business community. The EU was Hong Kong's third-largest trading partner in goods. |
