Summary: Erdoğan’s re-election as president in 2023 meant that Turkey would redouble its efforts to forge an independent path in world affairs, reducing its ties to the West and strengthening those with other powers. Co-operation with the West would still take place, but it would be wholly transactional. The potential for additional turbulence, particularly over foreign policy would remain high, as there were a range of issues on which Ankara wass likely to clash with the EU and the US. The West should expect a bumpy ride. |
