Summary: After seven years of acrimony, relations between the EU and the UK improved when a compromise was reached over the Northern Ireland protocol. However, the Conservative Party remained deeply Eurosceptic and the compromise was rejected by the Democratic Unionists. Prime Minister Sunak Sunak wanted good relations with the EU but was wary of upsetting hard-line MPs in the European Research Group (ERG). Grant calls on a future Labour government to adopt a serious long term strategy for improving relations with the EU.
