Summary:Directive (EU) 2024/1799 - adopted by the co-legislators on 13 June 2024 - setting out common rules to promote the repair of goods. It also introduces amendments to Regulation (EU) 2017/2394, Directive (EU) 2019/771 and Directive (EU) 2020/1828. This is also known as the Right to Repair Directive (R2RD). This is a text with EEA relevance. Further information:The premature disposal of reparable goods purchased by consumers leads to an increase in waste, and generate greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and more demand for valuable resources in the production of new goods. This problem exists across the European Union (EU) for a wide ranger of these goods. The European Commission's European Green Deal focuses on the green transition, which comprises sustainable consumption. The outcome of the Conference on the Future of Europe (CoFoE) also included a call for a right to repair. This Directive seeks to deliver on both. It lays down common rules strengthening the provisions related to the repair of goods, with a view to contributing to the proper functioning of the European Union's (EU) single market, while providing for a high level of consumer and environmental protection. The draft law was first announced in the New Consumer Agenda and Circular Economy Action Plan. It was eventually adopted by the European Commission on 22 March 2023. The plenary of the European Parliament endorsed a negotiating position on 21 November. The Council of the European Union adopted a general approach on the draft law on 22 November. An informal agreement between the co-legislators on a compromise text for this file was reached on 2 February 2024. This was formally endorsed by Parliament 23 April on and by the Council on 30 May. The Act was signed by the co-legislators on 13 June 2024 and published in the Official Journal on 10 July 2024. |
