Summary:Communication adopted by the European Commission on 21 February 2023, setting out a Fisheries and Oceans Pact to establish a new phase in the dialogue between the European Commission and the stakeholders in the fisheries and aquaculture sector. Further information:The goal of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) is to ensure the long-term sustainability for fisheries and aquaculture, the availability of food supplies and a fair standard of living for the sector's communities. The CFP combines environmental, social and economic sustainability objectives, which were strengthened by the European Green Deal and its related strategies. The marine environment, the biodiversity and the socio-economic fabric face a number of challenges, such as the effects of maritime activities, pollution, and climate change. An integrated approach that is coherent with other policy domains is required. The purpose of this Communication is to report on the functioning of the CFP, and to set out a vision and a path toward sustainable and resilient fisheries of the future. It was adopted by the European Commission on 21 February 2023, as part of a legislative package focusing on the sustainability and resilience of the EU's fisheries and aquaculture sector. |
