Summary:Set of conclusions adopted by the Council of the European Union on 20 February 2023, concerning the need for a renewed EU strategy as regards the Great Lakes region. Further information:These conclusions set out the need for a renewed long-term engagement of the European Union (EU) with the Greak Lakes region. The main objective and priority is to promote peace, democracy and sustainable development in that African region by contributing to the transformation of the main root causes of insecurity and instability into shared opportunities. The EU's engagement aims to prioritise support to the countries' commitment to peace, respect of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all the countries in the region and fostering an environment of mutual trust and partnership. The strategy is to serve as reference framework for all EU policies and actions in the region. The focus is on the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda, but engagement is open to other countries and organisations in the region.
