Summary:Council Regulation (EU) 2022/2586 - adopted by the Council of the European Union on 19 December 2022 - concerning the application of Articles 93, 107 and 108 of the Treaty on the Functioning of the European Union (TFEU) to certain categories of State aid in the rail, inland waterway and multimodal transport sector. This is a text with EEA relevance. Further information:In December 2020, the European Commission adopted its Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy, in which the strengthening of rail and inland waterway transport, as well as multimodal transport, is seen as an essential component of the green and digital transformation of transport across the European Union (EU). However, those objectives cannot be reached without major investments by the Member States - this calls for State aid rules that allow those investments where such public support is necessary while preserving and enhancing competition in rail, inland waterway and multimodal transport. This Regulation enables the Commission to exempt from prior notification under EU State aid rules certain types of aid for rail, inland waterway and multimodal transport, with the objective of promoting green transport. It covers aid under Article 93 TFEU. It was adopted by the European Commission on 6 July 2022, in the context of the revision of the State aid Railway Guidelines. It was adopted by the Council of the European Union on 19 December 2022. The Act was published in the Official Journal on 30 December 2022. |
