Summary: Legislative initiative tabled by the European Commission on 22 June 2022, aimed at reducing the use of chemical pesticides and ensuring more sustainable food systems by 2030. It also introduces amendments to Regulation (EU) 2021/2115. This is a text with EEA relevance. Further information: Directive 2009/128/EC - also known as Sustainable Use of Pesticides Directive (SUD) - set out rules for the sustainable use of pesticides, and promoted the use of integrated pest management and different techniques such as non-chemical alternatives. Following assessments and feedback on the implementation, enforcement and application across the European Union (EU), a number of weaknesses were detected. The proposal sets out legally binding targets at EU and national level to reduce by 50% the use and the risk of chemical pesticides and the use of the more hazardous pesticides by 2030. The proposed rules also cover environmentally friendly pest control through the use of integrated pest management (IPM), and the availability of monitoring data, and the use of less hazardous and non-chemical alternatives. A ban on all pesticides in sensitive areas is also proposed. The draft Regulation was adopted by the European Commission on 22 June 2022 as part of a so-called nature protection package. It delivered on elements of the European Green Deal, in particular on commitments under the Farm to Fork Strategy. |
