Summary: Communication published by the European Commission on 11 May 2022, setting out a new European strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK+). Further information: The first European strategy for a better internet for kids (BIK) was adopted in 2012. It set a global benchmark, guiding and shaping national policies in the European Union (EU). Member States incorporated elements of the BIK strategy. In March 2021, the European Commission adopted its first-ever comprehensive EU strategy on the rights of the child, and the updated (BIK+) strategy is seen as its digital arm. It reflects the proposed digital principle that children and young people should be protected and empowered online. BIK+ therefore aims to complement and support the practical implementation of the existing measures to protect children online, develop children’s skills and empower them to safely enjoy and shape their life online. The new strategy was based on an extensive consultation process with children, complemented by targeted consultations with parents, teachers, Member States, ICT and media industry, civil society, academics and international organisations. |
