Summary: Information Guide concerning the election for the Presidency of the European Parliament for a mandate covering the second half of the term (2022-2024). Further information: The President of the European Parliament presides over the debates and activities of the European Parliament, and also represent the chamber within the European Union (EU) and internationally. The Presidents serve two-and-a-half year terms. In January 2022, the plenary of the European Parliament was schedule to vote for its 33rd President. S&D's David Sassoli held the seat since his election in 2019. In December 2021, media sources reported that Mr Sassoli would not seek reelection and his party would not place a candidate to replace him. EPP's Roberta Metsola became the frontrunner in the election, after it became clear that her colleague Manfred Weber was not available to run for the position. Ms Metsola was elected during a plenary session of the European Parliament on 18 January 2022, winning in the first voting round with an absolute majority of 458 votes out of 690 cast in the remote secret vote. There were two other candidates running for the position - Alice Bah Kuhnke (Greens/EFA) and Sira Rego (The Left). |
