Further information:

The Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement (SFPA) and protocol establishes the principles, rules and procedures governing:

• Economic, financial, technical and scientific cooperation in the fisheries sector;
• The conditions governing access by the European Union (EU) to the Greenlandic Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ);
• The arrangements for regulating fisheries of EU vessels in the Greenlandic EEZ;
• Partnerships between companies aimed at developing economic activities, in the common interest.

The agreement covers a period of four years, with the possibility of a two-year extension. The need for a new agreement arose from the expiration of the previous Fisheries Partnership Agreement (FPA) on 30 December 2020. The EU's intention was also to integrate certain provisions of Regulation (EU) No 1380/2013 on the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) that the FPA does not cover.

Negotiations for the SFPA were concluded on 8 January 2021 and the Agreement was signed on 22 April 2021.
