Summary: Set of conclusions adopted by the Council of the European Union through written procedure on 11 March 2021, concerning the relations between the European Union (EU) and Ethiopia in light of the latest developments in the country. Further information: These conclusions highlight on the one hand the important role played by the country as a strategic partner and a multilateral actor, and on the other hand the concerns raised by the EU regarding the situation in the Ethiopian Tigray region. The Council urges all parties to bring violence to an end in the region and stresses the need to increase the efforts by national authorities to address the needs of the local population. The Council also showed concern over the testimonies as to possible war crimes and crimes against humanity, extra-judicial killings and other serious human rights violations and abuses. The EU calls for these actions to end immediately and for perpetrators to be brought to justice. The Ethiopian government is also encouraged to enhance cooperation with the African Union. The efforts to undertake a democratic transition in the country are acknowledged. |
