Summary:

Britain’s recent departure from the European Union (EU) showcases what can happen when dissatisfaction with the EU and its perceived lack of democracy reaches an extreme. This poll of the 27 member states of the European Union plus the United Kingdom (UK) paints a more positive picture of the health of European democracy.

The survey, conducted by eupinions for the Oxford University Europe’s Stories research project in December 2020, suggests that there is strong support for the European Parliament, with four out of five Europeans believing that it is important to have a supranational parliament. We also show that most Europeans believe that EU membership has brought them personal benefits, particularly in the form of freedom of movement. This reflects strong support for freedom of movement found in previous polls, including a 2018 Eurobarometer poll which showed four in five Europeans to be supportive of free movement in the EU.
