Summary: Communication published by the European Commission on 9 December 2020, setting out its Sustainable and Smart Mobility Strategy. Further information: The Strategy aims at laying the foundation for how the transport system in the European Union (EU) can achieve its green and digital transformation and become more resilient to future crises. It is structured around three key objectives: making the European transport system sustainable, smart and resilient. It includes an action plan of 82 initiatives to guide policy for a period of four years. This plan addresses the need to achieve a 90% reduction in transport-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050, in order for the EU to achieve climate neutrality as outlined in the European Green Deal. In this context, digitalisation is an essential driver for the modernisation of the entire system. In addition, the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic shed a light on the vulnerabilities of the single market and the need to strengthen its resilience. |
