Summary: Legislative initiative presented in October 2019 by the European Commission providing financial assistance to Greece following flooding and landslides in Crete. Further information: Between 23 and 26 February 2019 exceptionally heavy rain and storm hit Crete, in particular the western part of the island. The resulting floods and landslides caused the loss of human life and have had disastrous consequences for infrastructure and economic activities, in particular on roads and in agriculture. The European Union Solidarity Fund (EUSF) aims to enable the European Union (EU) to respond to emergency situations in order to show solidarity with the population of regions struck by natural disasters. Greece applied for a contribution from the EUSF on 15 May 2019. The European Commission accepted the request and put forward a proposal for the allocation of funding on 18 October. The plenary session of the European Parliament endorsed it on 27 November. |
