Summary: Reports, analyses and information on the appointment of Slovenia's Janez Lenarčič as European Commissioner for Crisis Management, in the European Commission led by Ursula von der Leyen. Further information: Janez Lenarcic is a former civil servant and a career diplomat, holding the role as Slovenian ambassador to the European Union (EU) before being selected by the government as the country's candidate for the College of Commissioners in July 2019. While he was not affiliated with any political party, media sources reported his approximation to the liberal Renew Europe group. Mr Lenarčič was formally announced on 9 September 2019 by the President of the European Commission. His portfolio was known on the following day, set to take on the role as the European Commissioner for Crisis Management. The relevant committees of the European Parliament held a hearing with Mr Lenarčič on 2 October, in order to assess his capabilities to lead the portfolio. Mr Lenarčič was eventually endorsed by the European Parliament as a suitable candidate for the position. |
