Summary: Protocol on the implementation of the Fisheries Partnership Agreement between São Tomé and Príncipe and the European Community. Further information: The Fisheries Partnership Agreement between São Tomé and Príncipe and the European Community first entered into force in August 2011 has since been renewed automatically. The previous Protocol to the Agreement entered into force in May 2014 and expired in May 2018. The European Commission conducted negotiations with the country's authorities with a view to concluding a new Protocol to the Agreement. Following these negotiations, the new Protocol was initialled on 17 April 2019 and covers a period of five years from the date of its provisional application. The Protocol enables the European Union (EU) and São Tomé and Príncipe to work more closely on the promotion of sustainable exploitation of fisheries resources in national waters and on efforts to develop the county's blue economy, in the interests of both parties. Legislative proposals on the signing, provisional application and conclusion of this Protocol were adopted by the European Commission in August 2019, as well as a proposal on the allocation of fishing opportunities under the Protocol. The Council Decision on the signing and provisional application [Decision (EU) 2019/2218], as well as the Council Regulation on fishing opportunities [Regulation (EU) 2019/2219], were adopted in October 2019 and published in the Official Journal on 27 December. |
