Summary: Decision (EU) 2021/820 - formally adopted by the co-legislators on 20 May 2021 - presenting a new Strategic Innovation Agenda (SIA) for the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) for the period 2021-2027. Further information: The European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT) was established in 2008 by Regulation (EC) No 294/2008 (the 'EIT Regulation'). Its purpose is to address major societal challenges by improving the innovation capacity and performance of the EU through the integration of the knowledge triangle of education, research and innovation. The EIT achieves these goals primarily through its Knowledge and Innovation Communities (KICs). Article 17 of the EIT Regulation requires that every seven years the European Commission submits a proposal for a strategic innovation agenda (SIA) that lays down the priority fields and the long-term strategy and financial needs for the EIT, in line with the applicable Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. For the period 2021-2027, the SIA should thus ensure alignment with the objectives of Horizon Europe as well as the strategic multiannual planning, monitoring and other requirements of that programme, and foster synergies with other relevant programmes. This Regulation adopts the SIA 2021-2027, which is to be implemented in accordance with Regulation (EU) 2021/819. It also repeals Decision No 1312/2013/EU. The proposal for this Decision was tabled by the European Commission on 11 July 2019. An informal agreement between the co-legislators on a compromise text was reached on 28 January 2021. Following formal endorsement, the Decision was signed by the co-legislators on 20 May 2021 and published in the Official Journal on 28 May 2021. |
