The accounts of the EU are kept in accordance with Regulation (EU, Euratom) No 1046/2018 on the financial rules applicable to the general budget of the Union (the Financial Regulation). The EU prepares its financial statements on the basis of accrual-based accounting rules that are based on International Public Sector Accounting Standards (IPSAS). Financial statements are presented annually. The accounting year begins on 1 January and ends on 31 December.
