Summary: Reports, analyses and information on the electoral campaign and the aftermath of the European Parliament election held in Austria on 26 May 2019. Further information: The European Parliament elections were held only one week after a video of former Vice Chancellor Heinz-Christian Strache (FPÖ) was published, showing him promising public contracts in return for positive coverage in Austrian media. However, the far-right Freedom Party (FPÖ) suffered only a minor setback in the European Parliament election, coming in third with 17,20% of the vote. Centre-right Austrian People's Party ÖVP emerged as the clear winner of the election getting 34,6% of the vote, while the main opposition, the social democrats SPÖ, were put at 23,5%. The Greens received 14,1%, followed by the liberal NEOS party (8,4%). Conflicts between the populist right and the rest of the political spectrum on topics such as immigration dominated the electoral campaign.
