Summary: Reports, analyses and information on the electoral campaign and the aftermath of the European Parliament election held in Latvia on 25 May 2019. Further information: Latvian politics had been very unpredictable in the past with a high turnover of parties. The results were a surprise for both conservative New Unity, which won the largest share of the vote, although its share of the vote dropped from more than 46% in 2014 to 26.24% and the right-wing National Alliance, which was expected to win one mandate but wound up with two (16,4%). The social democratic party Harmony came second while Development/For! won 12,42% and the Latvian Russian Union 6,24% of the vote. However, there were no seats for the Greens and Farmers Union, which had been expected to get one seat each. Contrary to other European member states was Euroscepticism not a central theme in the electoral campaign. |
