Summary: Reports, analyses and information on the electoral campaign and the aftermath of the European Parliament election held in Greece on 26 May 2019. Further information: Attitudes in Greece towards the European Union indicate increasing EU appreciation but are largely negative compared to the European average. The financial bailout of Greece officially ended in August 2018. However, it must still implement policy commitments. A main concern of the Greek population is the issue of immigration. The European elections coincide with municipal and regional elections, which means citizens will take many factors into consideration. The centre-right party New Democracy (ND) was forecasted to double its seats from five to ten in the European parliament and win between 25% - 30% of the vote, followed by the ruling left-wing SYRIZA party with circa 20-25%. Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras called a snap general election after SYRIZA suffered a severe beating in the European Parliament and regional elections. SYRIZA won only about 24% of the vote in the European Parliament election, while the opposition New Democracy party won 33%. |
