Summary:

In November 2016 the European Commission presented a proposal to amend Regulation (EU) 2016/794 (the Europol Regulation) in relation to the establishment of the European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS). The European Parliament and the Council of the European Union adopted the new Regulation on 12 September 2018.

Further information:

The ETIAS is an automated system created to identify any security or irregular migratory risks posed by visa-exempt visitor travelling to the Schengen area. All non-EU nationals who do not need a visa to travel to the Schengen area need to apply for a travel authorisation through the ETIAS system prior to their trip. ETIAS was established by Regulation (EU) 2018/1240.

Europol is given a significant role in terms of ensuring the security objectives of the ETIAS. It is therefore necessary to update Regulation (EU) 2016/794 accordingly.
