Summary: A special meeting of the European Council in its EU27 (Art. 50) format was held on 25 November 2018, to address the United Kingdom's withdrawal from the European Union. Further information: Heads of State and Government from the EU27 Member States endorsed the draft withdrawal agreement - which sets out the conditions for the exit of the United Kingdom from the European Union - and approved the non-legally binding political declaration outlining the framework for the post-Brexit relationship between the two sides. The European Council invited the EU institutions to make sure the agreement can enter into force in time for an orderly withdrawal of the United Kingdom, in March 2019. It also stated it would seek to have as close as possible a partnership with the United Kingdom in the future. This special European Council was held after a few days of uncertainty related to last-minute concerns showed by some Member States, relating in particular to fishing rights and the status of Gibraltar in post-Brexit negotiations between the European Union and the United Kingdom. These issues were subject to interpretative statements following the European Council meeting. |
