Summary: The 15th of November 2018 saw the 7th EU-South Africa summit taking place in Brussels. South Africa is one of the European Union's ten Strategic Partners. Hence the summit represented a unique opportunity to assess the state of play of the whole range of issues under the EU-South Africa Strategic Partnership. The summit also served to reaffirm the commitment of both EU and South African leaders to effective multilateralism and the rules-based international order. President of the European Council Donald Tusk, President of the European Commission Jean-Claude Juncker and President of the Republic of South Africa Cyril Ramaphosa, met on 15th in Brussels for the summit and issued a joint statement. EU and South African leaders agreed at the summit to strengthen their strong ties and to broaden cooperation. Both sides pledged for advancing multilateralism and the rules-based order. Leaders discussed bilateral cooperation as well as foreign and security issues. They also addressed common challenges, such as climate change and migration. The summit took place 100 years after Nelson Mandela's birth and was an opportunity to build on his unique legacy. |
