Summary: Regulation (EU) 2021/1147 - formally adopted by the European Union on 7 July 2021 - establishing the Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund (AMIF) for the period between 2021 and 2027. Further information: This Regulation lays down the objectives of the Fund, the budget for the period 2021-2027, the forms of EU funding and the rules for providing such funding. The draft law was tabled by the European Commission on 12 June 2018 in the framework of its proposals on the wider Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) for 2021-2027. The proposed Fund was designed to strengthen and develop all aspects of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS), support legal migration to the Member States, tackle illegal migration and ensure effectiveness of return and readmission in third countries. The plenary of the European Parliament adopted its negotiating position on 13 March 2019. The Council of the European Union adopted its general approach on this file on 7 June, excluding the provisions relating to the wider financial framework. A political agreement between Member States on the financial ceilings of the wider MFF was reached in July 2020, followed by an interinstitutional agreement in November. The co-legislators reached an informal agreement on a compromise text concerning this file on 9 December 2020. This was formally endorsed by the Council of the European Union on 14 June 2021 and by the Parliament on 6 July. The Act was signed by the co-legislators on 7 July 2021 and published in the Official Journal on 15 July 2021. |
