Summary:

The European Commission published on 13 June 2018 a Report providing an update on a set of areas covered by its Security Union strategy, which covers two main pillars: tackling terrorism and organised crime and the means that support them; strengthening defences and building resilience against those threats.

Further information:

The need for a Security Union drew from the transnational nature of threats like terrorism, even though security remained primarily as a responsibility of the Member States. The necessary tools, infrastructure and environment already existed on a EU level, but the full added value of a Security Union depended on the use made of that framework, to close operational loopholes and plug information gaps.

The Reports provides an overview of progress in different initiatives put forward by the European Commission in this framework. The document is part of a package of documents and reports relating to security and defence released on the same day.
