Further information: The European Union's three largest economies agreed on 29 April 2018 on the need to be 'ready to react' to trade tariffs imposed by the United States, as the exemption deadline was reached. These tariffs had been announced in March by the US President Donald Trump on national security grounds, under the argument that cheap imports were undermining home-based producers crucial to military preparedness. A temporary reprieve was then given to those countries which are the main suppliers to the US market. However, Mr Trump decided to postpone the deadline on 30 April, granting a further 30 days to the European Union, Mexico and Canada to encourage further negotiations. The new deadline was set for 1 June. |
