The United Government published a policy paper UK position paper on the future of cohesion policy in April 2018. It set out considerations for future EU cohesion policy programmes and reflected on lessons learnt. Although the UK was leaving the EU, the UK wanted the EU to succeed and prosper. There were a number of lessons to learn from current and previous cohesion policy programmes and from the experiences of other member states. The UK had implemented cohesion policy programmes for over 40 years, and reflections on their implementation to date could help ensure a successful cohesion policy post-2020. Post-Brexit the government had committed to create a UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF), a domestic programme of investment after leaving the EU. It would consult on the design and priorities of the new fund later in 2018, as committed in the Industrial Strategy. |
