Summary: The former head of Catalonia's government Carles Puigdemont was arrested in Germany on 25 March 2018, following the reactivation of the European Arrest Warrant against him two days before. A German Court decided on 12 July his extradition to face Spanish charges of misuse of public funds but not the graver charge of rebellion. Further information: Mr Puigdemont was arrested after crossing the border from Denmark on his way back to Belgium, where he was living in self-imposed exile since October 2017. Thousands of his supporters protested in Barcelona in result, demanding his release. Clashes erupted between some protesters and Catalonian riot police members. Germany first decided to refuse his extradition to Spain on 5 April due to poor backing to the charge of rebellion against Mr Puidgemont. On the next day, the former leader was freed on bail. |
