Further information: The European Parliament defends an increase to the limit on EU expenditure from 1% to 1.3% of EU GNI in order to be able to fund political priorities withour sacrificing the EU's regions or farming communities. Key proposals include boosting research programmes, Erasmus+, the Youth Employment Initiative and support for SMEs as well as infrastructure investment through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). Background information: + ESO Key Source: Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF) 2014-2020 Every seven years, the European Union decides about its future finances by setting up its Multiannual Financial Framework. It lays down the maximum annual amounts ('ceilings') which the European Union may spend in different political fields ('headings') over a period of at least 5 years. The debate on the MFF becomes the time for Leaders to commit financially to the kind of Union they envisage, related to the debate on the future of Europe. The European Commission published on 14 February 2018 a Communication setting out different options (and their financial consequences) for the post-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). |
