Abstract:

The German health system needs highly qualified physicians and, especially a sufficient number of practising physicians. There are no signs of a shortage of highly qualified physicians in Germany. The new hospital financing system with ‘Diagnoses-Related Groups’ and new proportion numbers for physicians for registration in the statutory health insurance system will decrease the need of physicians in the future. The new member states of the European Union will lead to a process in which more physicians with an education in other European countries or in other parts of the world will come to Germany.

With the good structure of the study and a minimum number of break offs there will be a sufficient number of physicians for the clinical work. The increasing interest in a medical education and a good education in general medical practice will ensure a sufficient number of physicians with the required preconditions for the future. The new German medical education law is a good basis for the reimprovement of the attractiveness of clinical work for medical doctors and a good basis to ensure a sufficient number of highly qualified physicians for the future health system of Germany.
