Analysis feature in which the author suggested that the German government was floating the idea in 2018 of restructuring EU funds such as the structural funds to benefit member states that took in migrants and refugees. What seemed like a selfish move by the country that hosted the largest number of refugees in Europe might be a step towards resolving the lingering EU political crises. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on the 22 February 2018: 'With the distribution of structural funds, we must ensure that the allocation criteria in future reflect the engagement of many regions and municipalities in absorbing and integrating migrants'.
