Further information: On 11 March 2018 a conference of Le Pen's National Front was held in Lille, Northern France. One of the main topic of the congress was the changing of the party's name in Rassemblement National (National Rally) since, according to Le Pen, it reflected FN's political project. However, only 52% of Members backed changing the party name and they will vote on the new name by post. During the congress, Le Pen attacked the EU, globalisation, the free market, Islamism and immigration. Sections on French values and traditions, the French language, national identity and heritage brought cheers and applause. Moreover, the conference approved a change of FN rules that stripped Le Pen's father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, of his title as honorary president. He founded the party in 1972 but he was thrown out of it in 2015 after repeating antisemitic and racist comments. Also former top Trump aide Steve Bannon participated in the congress and he told the French far right that 'history is on our side'. A congress of Le Pen's National Front was held on 11 March 2018. |
