Further information: Mr Adams' tenure as leader of Sinn Fein came to an end after more than three decades, with Mary Lou McDonald officially taking over as party president. Ms McDonald was officially ratified as the new Sinn Fein leader at a special party conference on 10 February 2018. Around 2,000 delegates gathered at the conference for the handing over of the presidency. Mr Adams had announced in November 2017 that he would be stepping aside after 34 years in the role. The longstanding leader of the Irish Republican Sinn Féin, Gerry Adams, handed over the reins of the party on 10 February 2018 to his former deputy Mary Lou McDonald. |
