Summary: NATO heads of state or government met on 11-12 July 2018 in Brussels for a Summit which analysts expected to produce further tension between some Member States. Further information: This Summit was held after a series of events which strained relations between US President Donald Trump and some of the allies in the West, including the G7 Summit and the imposition of tariffs on imports of steel and aluminium from the EU. President Trump applied pressures on many NATO members to increase their military spending level to the agreed at the 2014 NATO Summit 2% of GDP guideline and beyond, with particular emphasis on Germany. |
