Further information: This guidance outlines what the European Commission, national data protection authorities and national administrations should still do to bring the preparation to a successful completion. It recalls the main innovations, opportunities opened up by the new rules, takes stock of the preparatory work already undertaken and outlines the work still ahead of all stakeholders. Background information: The General Data Protection Regulation enables the free flow of data across the Digital Single Market. The data protection reform package was first proposed in January 2012 and adopted in April 2016. It includes the General Data Protection Regulation and the data Protection Directive for Police and Criminal Justice Authorities. It updates and replaces the data protection rules that based on the 1995 Data Protection Directive and the 2008 Framework Decision for the police and criminal justice sector. The European Commission published on 24 January 2018 a document comprising guidance aimed at facilitating a direct and smooth application of new data protection rules across the European Union, as of 25 May. |
