It includes the General Data Protection Regulation and the data Protection Directive for Police and Criminal Justice Authorities. It updates and replaces the data protection rules that based on the 1995 Data Protection Directive and the 2008 Framework Decision for the police and criminal justice sector.

The European Commission published on 24 January 2018 a document comprising guidance aimed at facilitating a direct and smooth application of new data protection rules across the European Union, as of 25 May.
